The MIT Media Lab

Known for its interdisciplinary approach to AI, the MIT Media Lab brings together researchers from diverse fields and backgrounds to explore the human and social implications of AI. Currently, the lab has hundreds of projects that span multiple disciplines. From responsible AI to protein discovery and more, The MIT Media Lab aims to drive AI research to create a “transformative future” while working toward the social good. Recently, they unveiled new mind-body neural control prostheses.

The Stanford AI Lab

Founded in 1963, the Stanford AI Lab has made significant contributions to various domains, including natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. Similar to the MIT lab, its approach is multidisciplinary to enhance human-robot interactions using the power of AI. One of their notable recent projects is a new interpretability method for training neural networks with sparse, discrete, and controllable hidden states.

The DeepMind Lab

DeepMind, acquired by Google in 2014, has been responsible for groundbreaking advancements in AI, such as the AlphaGo program that defeated the world’s best Go players. For those within the data science world, this achievement was tremendous as Go provides a game of almost infinite possibilities. Currently, DeepMind is working on a number of models aimed at increasing the computing power of AI while minding costs. They recently introduced a new AI system that can learn to play a variety of Atari games from raw pixels. Another project, SynthID, helps to identify and watermark AI-generated images.

The Facebook AI Research Lab (FAIR)

Established in 2013, FAIR has quickly become one of the most influential AI research labs in the world, partially when it comes to open-source technology and models such as Llama 2. They are widely recognized for their work in developing cutting-edge NLP models and their efforts to make AI more accessible through open-source software and like many other labs, work in multiple domains to help push for greater investment into multidisciplinary AI.

One of their notable advancements is the Llama model, a powerful LLM that is open source. The open-source philosophy behind Llama aligns with the broader vision of democratizing AI. By making the model accessible and encouraging collaborative efforts, it breaks down barriers to entry and enables more inclusive participation in AI research and development.

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)

Founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, AI2 conducts research in diverse areas of AI, with a focus on developing AI systems that can reason, communicate, and learn from experience. The institute’s motto is “AI for the common good,” which is seen with its push in disciplines such as the environment, computer vision, and other projects that hope to utilize the power of AI to improve lives. Recently, they published a paper on a new approach to training AI models that requires less data.

The Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Lab

BAIR is a research lab closely affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. Their research encompasses a broad spectrum of AI disciplines, including AI theory, reinforcement learning, and robotics. Notably, BAIR recently unveiled a pioneering algorithm that revolutionizes the efficiency of deep learning models. But that’s not all.

BAIR’s robotics program focuses on developing robots that exhibit high levels of autonomy, intelligence, and dexterity. Their research spans a wide range of areas, including robot perception, control, planning, and human-robot interaction. BAIR aims to create robots that can assist humans in various tasks, enhance our quality of life, and enable us to explore and understand the world around us. In a new paper, BAIR is hoping to provide educators the edge against AI ghostwritten assignments turned in by students.

The Carnegie Mellon University Language Technologies Institute (LTI)

LTI is a lab dedicated to investigating more than 20 areas of language and information technologies to assist in advancing the state-of-the-art in language technologies, including machine translation, speech recognition, and natural language understanding. Their research has resulted in significant improvements in the performance of machine translation systems.\

In a recent project, researchers at LTI used NLP modes to model crosslinguistic influences between different language varieties to see if current NLP models are biased toward native language speakers.

UCLA StarAI Lab

The StarAI Lab, founded in 2020, is a research lab dedicated to pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) while also considering its societal ramifications. Recently, a new study introduced a novel and efficient methodology for learning from weakly labeled data, addressing a significant challenge in machine learning by improving the accuracy and applicability of models in scenarios where only partial or imprecise labels are available.

Conclusion

Some amazing stuff right? These labs are incubators of the latest AI-driven technologies and will likely become the place where the next world-shaking announcement is made. Now if you want to keep up on the latest on their research, then you’ll want to head over to ODSC East 2024. At East, you’ll not only talks from speakers from DeepMind and Meta AI but other labs that are in the trenches of AI development.

So get your pass today and see for yourself how AI will shape our future.
