The wait is officially over. OpenAI has announced a new subscription plan for its widely popular chatbot, ChatGPT, called ChatGPT Plus. But for those of us who don’t want to return to a time when we couldn’t call up the chatbot for research assistance, don’t worry. That’s because though there is a new subscription plan, the chatbot will still be available for free without premium features. ChatGPT Plus has three main perks: “General access to ChatGPT, even during peak hours, Faster response times, and Priority access to new features and improvements.”

For hardcore users, each of these is an important quality-of-life improvement. Since its release back in November of 2022, ChatGPT has taken the internet and labor market by storm. According to OpenAI’s blog post, ChatGPT Plus is available to users in the United States and is already in the process of inviting people from their waitlist. As for those in other nations, OpenAI plans on expanding access and support to other countries as well as regions in the near future.

Because of its well-rounded abilities, and easy-to-use interface, the program has become a major face of artificial intelligence for the public at large. This has been seen by software engineers, students, and other users flocking to the program for its powerful abilities to process, inform, and present information in unique ways, while also finding errors in snippets of code. This is something that the CEO of Microsoft mentioned in an interview last month, hoping workers wouldn’t fear the rise of AI, but instead welcome it as a means to enhance existing abilities.

Today’s news wasn’t only about the new subscription-based model launch of ChatGPT Plus. In their post, OpenAI also spoke about the feedback the team has received from millions of users and their inclusion of improvements to their system. With a growing audience of users, many that aren’t familiar with artificial intelligence in general, it will be interesting what the team takes from their data when it comes to future updates.

Finally, OpenAI opened up about the future of ChatGPT. Of course, continuing to improve upon the system based on user needs and feedback was mentioned first. But they closed with two pieces of interesting news. First, further expanding the ChatGPT Plus subscription model to include lower-cost plans, which will likely make the premium service available to a greater audience. Second, the soon-to-be-launched ChatGPT API waitlist. For those software engineer users, the API might be of great interest when it goes live.
