According to a report from Yahoo! Finance, Apple is hoping to push forward its efforts in generative AI in a bid to catch up with competitor Microsoft. More details are expected to come to light at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

There, the tech giant is preparing to showcase a series of generative AI-based tools, that should showcase its new AI strategy. This will include the introduction of an enhanced Siri under iOS 18. The news comes a few months after reports detailing Apple’s lag in the generative AI space.

This is also unsurprising given its recent shift in AI teams that saw a major reorganization effort from the company. The forthcoming enhancements to Siri, featuring generative AI capabilities, promise to revolutionize the way users engage with Apple devices.

One can expect the company to focus on both an intuitive and interactive user experience, with functionalities designed to directly compete with competitors on multiple fronts — Google, Microsoft, and others.

Beyond enhancing Siri, Apple is broadening its AI horizon with plans to introduce an AI tool aimed at simplifying software development. This tool, expected to integrate seamlessly with Apple’s Xcode software, mirrors the capabilities of Microsoft Corp.’s Copilot by providing code completion features.

Much like Google’s move last year, Apple is hoping to enhance its entire product range. This includes the introduction of AI-powered functionalities for automating Apple Music playlists and enriching business presentation software.

Clearly, these initiatives illustrate Apple’s broader goal of leveraging AI to enhance productivity and user engagement. A key aspect of Apple’s AI strategy involves strategic partnerships and technological innovation.

The company is also engaged with major publishers to secure rights for training its generative AI systems. Likely a move the company hopes will help R&D development by securing verticals outside current team scopes.

Apple’s move is unsurprising, yet a bit late compared to its major competitors. With that said, it wouldn’t be the first time that the company came from the rear to upend the industry through innovation. Only time will tell if Apple’s AI shift toward generative AI will pay off.
