From a School Talk to an AI Internship: My Journey into the World of Machine Learning and NLP
This is the story of how my interest in AI takes me to give a talk about AI, train my first machine-learning model, and get my internship at an AI research start-up.
Giving a talk on AI technology
On August 26th, 2022, I gave a talk on stage for my school event, Newton Talk #2. The topic was “Keep Innovating”. When I was choosing which stories to talk about, at first, I wanted to talk about how being a YouTuber has changed me, and what I have learned and reflected from it. Then, I changed to another topic which at this point I can’t recall. In the end, after some reflection on the concept of “Keep Innovating”, I landed on the topic of “AI is closer to you than you think” because when I was researching for my second topic, I came across the backend API website of OpenAI and when I started playing with it, I love it! (Back then, ChatGPT did not exist and DALL·E was still in the beta testing phase.) With all of the interest I have and the amazement of the technology, I chose this story of AI to be the topic of my talk.
Train my first machine-learning model
Fast forward to March 16th, 2023, I got into a program called “AI Builders”. It was a 10-week program that taught me how to train my first ever machine learning model as well as develop my first AI-driven product from scratch. That was when my interest in the subject grew deep down in my soul. It made me realize that I want to major in exactly the Machine Learning field during my university years instead of just computer science (in general) which consists of the other 28 subfields apart from Machine Learning.
Getting an AI research internship
After I completed the AI Builders program, I asked the person who is head of the program where can I find an AI and Machine Learning internship or whether I can be a part of his AI (research) work. He told me there is a research project on Thai natural language processing (NLP) that he is doing with an AI research start-up, VISAI, right now and asked me whether I would like to join it or not. I said, “Sure! I would appreciate that a lot!” He asked the professor that is in charge of the research team and let me know about the result the next day. Do you wanna know the result? I GOT THE INTERNSHIP!!! Hooray!🎉
Me now
So here I am, researching more on NLP, transformer models, and other things that are related to the job that I will be doing. This is my very first time having to really read research papers and it is tough. I am trying my best to understand the field and get myself ready for the work. Let’s go!
