Film Director Joe Russo Believes AI Could be Making Movies in Two Years
While speaking about the future of storytelling with Collider, Avenger’s director Joe Russo says he believes that AI could be making movies in as little as two years. Speaking from his own experience, “I’m on the board of a few AI companies,” it seems that the director thinks AI will go further than enhancing CGI and other elements of filmmaking.
While speaking with the news outlet, he spoke about how he is witnessing the development of technologies geared toward filmmaking, “[so] there are AI companies that are developing AI to protect you from AI.”
He also went on to mention the importance of learning how to use AI to protect one’s future prospects, “And unfortunately, we’re in that world, and you will need an AI in your life because whether we want to see it developed or not, people who are not friendly to us may develop it anyways. So, we’re going to be in that future. The question is, then, how we protect ourselves in that future?”
In a similar way, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, made similar comments about the importance of learning AI in the future. During the interview, Russo was asked about a timeframe when AI could be making movies. Joe Russo’s opinion, it’s as little as “two years.” Though it seems a bit soon, there are already some who are attempting this feat.
As we reported last summer, Salt is a sci-fi movie that is being created, almost entity, out of AI. So there are already creators in the background trying to make this a reality. Now back to Russo, he sees AI’s potential in several fronts. “Potentially, what you could do with [AI] is obviously use it to engineer storytelling and change storytelling…So you have a constantly evolving story, either in a game or in a movie or a TV show.” So think a “choose your own adventure” powered by AI.
He went on to provide a scenario of how this could work. “You could walk into your house and save the AI on your streaming platform. ‘Hey, I want a movie starring my photoreal avatar and Marilyn Monroe’s photoreal avatar. I want it to be a rom-com because I’ve had a rough day,’ and it renders a very competent story with dialogue that mimics your voice. It mimics your voice, and suddenly now you have a rom-com starring you that’s 90 minutes long. So you can curate your story specifically to you.”
It’s clear that the creative world is trying to figure out AI’s place as artists and other creators explore how AI can enhance their own talents. Though how AI will ultimately shape various industries it is entering is unknown.
