CDS Visiting Research Professor, Arian Maleki

Meet Arian Maleki, who will join CDS for the upcoming fall semester as a Visiting Research Professor. Currently an associate professor in the Department of Statistics at Columbia University, Arian’s research interests include high-dimensional statistics, computational imaging, compressed sensing, and machine learning.

Prior to his work at Columbia, Arian was a postdoctoral scholar at Rice University. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, completing a dissertation on the “Approximate message passing algorithms for compressed sensing.” His MSc degree in Statistics was also completed at Stanford University following his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University in Tehran, Iran.

Arian’s research has appeared in journals covering novel work in machine learning and artificial intelligence such as “Sharp concentration results for heavy-tailed distributions” (Information and Inference, 2023) and “Compressed sensing in the presence of speckle noise” (Transactions on Information Theory, 2022). He has presented at numerous international machine learning conferences such as “Analysis of the sensing spectrum for signal recovery under the generalized linear models” (NeurIPS, 2021) and “Error bounds for estimating out-of-sample prediction error using leave-one-out cross-validation in high-dimensions” (AISTAT, 2020).

He has taught various calculus and statistics courses from PhD to BSc levels. Some of his most recent work includes “Signal-to-noise ratio aware minimaxity and higher order asymptotics” (2022), Analysis of the sensing spectrum for signal recovery under the generalized linear models” (2022), and “Compressed sensing in the presence of speckle noise” (2022).
