These were exciting times: the Dartmouth AI conference had been held in 1956, with its promise of solving AI through symbolic methods. One of the problems with these threshold logic circuits was that they had to be hand-designed, yet neurons in the brain seemed to learn on their own. Not right away. This was a big deal.
